On our own, for free (or close to it)
Juneau is walkable from the ship, and plenty of the best things here don't need a tour.
Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls · Diego Delso, CC BY-SA 4.0The Glacier Express bus runs from the docks to the visitor center. The Photo Point and Nugget Falls trails are flat and easy.
A few blocks from the dock, with free tours on summer weekdays.
A tiny, octagonal church from 1894, the oldest in Southeast Alaska.
A waterfront path to the life-size humpback sculpture and fountain.
Excellent Alaska Native, gold-rush and natural history exhibits.
A rowdy gold-rush-era saloon with sawdust floors and a piano player. A fun stop.
Good to know
Before we book
Book early. Taku Lodge, the helicopter tours and the small-group trips sell out first on August sailings. Book in My Account on Holland America's site as soon as excursions open.
Weather. Flights (seaplane and helicopter) can be cancelled for low clouds. Holland America refunds in full if it cancels, so it's worth booking the splurge anyway.
Mount Roberts (Goldbelt) Tram. Holland America listed it as closed through Sep 29, 2026. Check that it's running in 2027 before booking the tram tours.
Weight limits. Helicopter tours weigh guests, and there's a surcharge at 250 lb and over.
Prices. These are Holland America's 2026 "from" prices per adult. One (the photo safari) is our estimate and marked "~". If you find the identical tour cheaper elsewhere, Holland America's Best Price Guarantee gives 110% of the difference as onboard credit.
