Chapter 1
Is this the cruise for us?
An honest scorecard, drawn from Holland America's own materials and recent passenger and press reviews (2024–2025).
It's a great fit if we want…
- The best Alaska route on any of our options. Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; few 7-night cruises get all five.
- A mid-size, easy ship. 2,104 guests, short walks and no mega-ship crowds.
- Great live music. The Rolling Stone Lounge band and Billboard Onboard dueling pianos get rave reviews.
- Real Alaska content: park rangers, a Huna Tlingit guide, local seafood and naturalists aboard.
- A grown-up atmosphere. The crowd skews 55+, with some families in summer, which suits a 70th.
Think twice if…
- We want a shiny new ship. Eurodam is from 2008. The 2023 refit was partial, and reviewers mention dated, scuffed cabin furniture. Its big "Evolution" makeover hasn't been scheduled and won't happen before Aug 2027.
- We want Broadway-level shows. Production shows are called repetitive; the music venues are the highlight.
- Every meal needs to be great. Specialty restaurants are excellent, but main-dining reviews range widely.
- We want Skagway and the White Pass train. This route skips Skagway.
Bottom line: If the trip is about Alaska itself (glaciers, whales, wildlife and small towns) with good food and an easy ship, Eurodam is an excellent choice for Diane's 70th. Plan the birthday dinner in the Pinnacle Grill on sail-away night, and book a verandah high on the ship.
Chapter 2 · Saturday, August 28, 2027
Diane's birthday, hour by hour
The birthday falls on boarding day, which works out well: a festive morning in Seattle, sail-away with a glass in hand, and a celebration dinner on the first night. Embarkation night is never a "Dressy" night, so it's smart casual.
- Fri eveBirthday-eve dinner in SeattleToast at midnight Eastern, 9 pm Pacific. Dinner ideas are in Chapter 3.
- 8:30 amBirthday breakfastAt the hotel, or on Pike Place Market's terrace. Cards and gifts before packing up.
- ~11:00 amRide to Pier 91XL rideshare or hotel shuttle at your assigned check-in time.

- 3:00 pmSail-away toastOn the aft Sea View deck or your balcony as Seattle, the Olympics and maybe Mount Rainier slide past.
- 5:00 pmHappy hour at Ocean BarAlaska craft cocktails like the Sitka Spritz. Billboard Onboard has half-price drinks 4–5 pm.
- 7:00 pmBirthday dinner, Pinnacle GrillHolland America's steakhouse. Pre-book for embarkation night and get a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. Ask for cake and a song.
- 9:30 pmDancing at the Rolling Stone LoungeA seven-piece live band plays three sets nightly. Or catch the "Welcome Aboard" show at the World Stage.

Adds a "Time to Celebrate" keepsake blanket, which will come in handy on Glacier Bay day.
$52 per person plus a 20% service charge. The embarkation-night deal adds free sparkling wine. Included if you buy Have It All.
Order through Holland America's gift shop before sailing. Also tell the maître d' on board. A free dining-room cake and song are common but not guaranteed.
A 7-day pass to the hydro pool, heated loungers, sauna and steam. Passes are limited and sell out on Alaska sailings, so pre-book one as a gift.
Chapter 3 · Friday, August 27
Seattle: flights, hotels and the birthday eve
The night before a Saturday Alaska turnaround is the busiest hotel night of the season, so book early on a refundable rate. Pier 91 (Smith Cove, 2001 W. Garfield St.) is about 3 miles northwest of downtown. No hotel is within walking distance and no public transit goes there.
Twelve hotels to choose from
Nightly rates are estimates for a peak late-August Friday, per room, before tax. Drive time is to Pier 91. Confirm shuttle details with each hotel, since they change every season.
Birthday-eve dinner
Reservations open 30–60 days ahead on OpenTable or Tock. Sunset on Aug 27 is about 8:00 pm, so a 6:30 pm table facing west catches it.

Spa, pools & fitness
Verandah cabins
Sizes include the balcony. The letter code mostly reflects deck and position: VA is higher and better placed, while VF and lower are lower decks or partly obstructed.
Chapter 5
Costs, packages and the budget
For all four of us in two verandah cabins. The cruise fare is Holland America's sampled price. Everything else is a planning estimate.
Excursions use our picks in Chapter 6: Mendenhall & Whale Quest, Point Adolphus whales, Wild Sitka, the Misty Fjords cruise and evening Butchart Gardens.
Worth a look
Have It All package
About $65 per person per day for August 2027 sailings (~$1,820 for four for 7 days). It includes:
- Signature Beverage Package: drinks up to $12, up to 15 a day
- One specialty dinner (so the Pinnacle Grill birthday dinner is covered)
- Surf Wi-Fi
- $100 per person excursion credit
Worth it if most of the group drinks 3–4 drinks a day. Every adult in a cabin must buy the same drinks package.

Day by day, with every excursion
These are Holland America's own excursions with its 2026 "from" prices per adult (2027 prices aren't out yet). "Diane?" is our read on how well each one suits a 70-year-old with average mobility. Use the filters to narrow the list.

Good to know
- Dress code: smart casual. There are two "Dressy" nights, usually the first full sea day (Sun Aug 29) and the second-to-last night. Think cocktail dress or a jacket; no tux needed.
- Dinner times: choose fixed seating (about 5:00 or 7:30 pm) or open dining (about 5:15–9:00 pm) when you book. Open dining is easier for a group of four.
- Sitka: the ship docks about 5–6 miles from town at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal. A free shuttle runs every 10–15 minutes.
- Ketchikan: the ship docks downtown, and it's walkable. All aboard is about 12:30 pm.
- Victoria: the ship docks at Ogden Point, about a 20–25 minute walk to the Inner Harbour. The stop runs 8 pm to midnight.
- Accessibility: accessible cabins, priority boarding and assistive listening devices are available. Several excursions have wheelchair-accessible versions.
- Bags on the last night: put them outside the door by about 10 pm on Fri Sep 3.
Pack for late August
- Weather: Seattle ~75°F; Juneau and Sitka ~55–62°F; Glacier Bay on deck ~45–50°F; rain likely.
- A waterproof hooded jacket, fleece, a warm hat and light gloves, and waterproof walking shoes.
- Two dressy outfits, a swimsuit for the Lido pool and hydro pool, and binoculars for everyone.
- Passports, a small daypack, motion-sickness remedies and a birthday banner.
Chapter 8
Fine print & things to double-check
We researched this in November 2026, nine months before sailing. These are the details most likely to change.
- Excursion line-up & prices: Holland America hasn't published its 2027 tours, so these are 2026 prices.
- Juneau's Goldbelt (Mount Roberts) Tram: Holland America listed it as closed through Sep 29, 2026. Check whether it reopens for 2027.
- Butchart Gardens evening hours: summer hours have run until about 10 pm, with viewing until 11. Holland America sells an evening-only Butchart tour for this call, but confirm it's offered on Sep 3.
- Evening tours at Icy Strait Point: not every tour runs on a 5:30–10 pm call. Check the booking page.
- Glacier Bay route: which glaciers you see (Margerie, Grand Pacific, Johns Hopkins, Lamplugh) is decided on the day, depending on ice and wildlife.
- Sitka berth: almost certainly the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal with a shuttle, but check the Visit Sitka cruise calendar closer to the date.
- Hotel rates and shuttles: these are estimates. Confirm each Pier 91 shuttle and price with the hotel.
- Prices on board: crew appreciation is $18 per person per day for verandahs (since June 2026), plus 20% on drinks and specialty dining. Have It All for Aug 2027 is about $65 per person per day.
